The Market at Jordan Creek is committed
to procuring fresh organic produce with two conditions,
first: wherever local, and second: whenever sensible.
We prefer to balance organic product with the issues
of transportation, cost and freshness.
In other words, if a pint of organic strawberries
must be flown in from a field in South America and
cost three times the price of conventionally grown
strawberries then the organic label is diminished
in the face of overconsumption of fossil fuels and
the exorbitant cost of the product passed onto the
consumer. And with that kind of distance between
grower and our store, product freshness will most
certainly be compromised.
When we have the option, we will always try our
best to source local product that is fresher than
product that must be trucked or flown in from other
parts of the world.
We are dedicated to sourcing locally grown produce,
even if that means the local product may not be
certified organic. Here the organic label may not
tell the whole story. Oftentimes smaller farmers
using organic and sustainable farming methods may
not be able to afford the expense to certify their
farm is organic with the FDA even though the product
is grown without chemicals in soil that has been
free of synthetic fertilizers for at least three
years.
The Market at Jordan Creek will always get as much
information from our suppliers about their product
and only work with local farmers who have a reputation
of high standards and offer a high degree of transparency
in their farming practices.
What
Organic Means for you
at The Market at Jordan Creek
A Certified Organic produce item means
that a grower must meet strict federal standards
that allow traceability from the field to the store.
Once in our store, organic product must be segregated
from conventional in our backroom storage coolers
as well as on our display tables. In our Produce
Department, we clearly designate what is organic
and display our produce with signage indicating
whether its conventional or organic.
Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy at The Market
at Jordan Creek come from animals that are given
no antibiotics or growth hormones. Overall, organic
food is produced without using most conventional
pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage
sludge-based fertilizers, bioengineering, or ionizing
radiation. Certification includes farm soil inspections
and routine testing, inspections of processing facilities,
and auditing of producer record keeping. This third-party
inspection process ensures that producers are meeting
the requirements.
